India Today Fact Check
Administrative action at PSIT came after students of the college allegedly chanted Islamophobic slogans.
Tensions flared across the country after the consecration ceremony of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, leading to communal clashes in several cities. Amid these sporadic incidents, a video of a man allegedly rebuking a student for chanting "Jai Shri Ram" and celebrating the Ram Mandir consecration in a college was widely shared.
Social media users claimed that the incident occurred at Pranveer Singh Institute of Technology (PSIT), a private engineering college in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. A Facebook user sharing the viral video wrote, “A Ram bhakt student threatened to be expelled from PSIT Kanpur by Chief DRUNKEN SMITH [Rice Bag] & Manpreet Dhillon for just raising Jai Shri Ram slogans in the college. They were celebrating Pran Pratishtha of Bhagwaan Ram Lalla.” Its archive can be seen here.
India Today found that while students chanted “Jai Shri Ram”, they also shouted derogatory slogans against Muslims, a video of which has also been widely shared on social media. The police have registered a case against the students involved.
OUR PROBE
A keyword search on social media led us to several posts from January 22, the day of the Ram Mandir consecration. These posts contained a video, seemingly from a hostel, where a popular Hindutva pop song "Bharat ka Bachha Bachcha" was being played loudly, accompanied by Islamophobic chants made by students in the background.
Reports from January 22 confirmed that the police took cognisance of the video, and subsequently, a case was filed against unknown individuals. The college administration also suspended some students.
The hostel warden's reprimand, as seen in a viral video, was also mentioned in the reports. ETV Bharat quoted the police stating that culprits were being identified after a case was registered against unknown individuals for making objectionable slogans against a particular religion.
To verify if it was indeed PSIT college, we compared the viral video of the warden reprimanding students and the one featuring students chanting slogans with videos of the boys' hostel at PSIT available on YouTube. Upon comparison, it became evident that both videos were from the same college.
Thus, it is evident that the students faced repercussions not for shouting “Jai Shri Ram” but for making objectionable slogans against Muslims.
