New Delhi (Vishvas News). A video of a train crash is going viral on social media, with people claiming that the train shown is Vande Bharat, involved in an accident in Chennai.
However, Vishvas News found that the video is from Chile, and no such accident with the Vande Bharat train has occurred in Chennai recently.
What is the viral post?
Instagram user ‘koiran364’ posted a video (archive link) showing a train accident with the caption, “Vande Bharat Express accident happened in Chennai. 2:00 AM Vande Bharat. 29/12/2024 Indian railway said.”
Investigation
To verify the authenticity of the viral claim, we conducted a Google search using relevant keywords and no news report of any recent accident involving the Vande Bharat train in Chennai was found. Reports confirmed a train collision near Chennai on October 11, 2024, where the Bagmati Express, a passenger train, collided with a stationary freight train near the Kavaraipettai railway station in Tiruvallur district. However, the visuals from that incident differ from those in the viral video.
We used Google Lens to analyse the screenshots of the viral post and discovered a report on a website called ‘The Star‘, published on June 20, 2024. According to this report, “Two people were killed and nine injured on Thursday when a train undergoing a test run by Chile’s state railway company (EFE) collided with a cargo train operated by private rail firm Fepasa, EFE said in a statement. The incident happened in the San Bernardo area shortly after midnight when an EFE train, performing a test run, collided with a stationary Fepasa train carrying approximately 1,346 metric tons of copper..”
Using relevant keywords, we found the full video of this accident in Chile uploaded on the YouTube channel of the ‘Associated Press’. The video closely matched the viral clip and was posted with the description “At least 2 killed, several others injured in a train accident in Chile.”
For further confirmation, we contacted Siddharth Tiwari, editor of News Station, a news website that monitors railway-related news. He confirmed that no such accident of the Vande Bharat train has occurred in Chennai.
We scanned the profile of Instagram user ‘koiran364’, who shared the video with a misleading claim. This page has about 1500 followers.
Conclusion: Vishvas News’ investigation revealed that this video is from Chile. No such accident involving the Vande Bharat train has occurred in Chennai.
