  • FACT CHECK: Was Ron DeSantis Denied Entry To Guantanamo Bay For A Second Time? A post shared on Facebook purports Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis was allegedly denied entry to Guantanamo Bay for the second time. Verdict: False The claim stems from an article published on a satirical website. A spokesperson for DeSantis denied the claim’s validity. Fact Check: DeSantis signed House Bill 1, which expands school choice options for Florida students, into law Monday, according to Fox News. The law eliminates income eligibility requirements for students in grades K-12 by providing them taxpayer-funded vouchers for private schools, The Associated Press reported. The Facebook post claims DeSantis was allegedly denied entry to Guantanamo Bay for the second time. The post further claims DeSantis’ spokesperson, Christina Pushaw, has repeatedly called Guantanamo Bay asking if the Florida Republican Governor can visit. The claim is false. There are no credible news reports suggesting DeSantis was allegedly denied entry to Guantanamo Bay for the second time. Likewise, the claim neither appears on the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps’ website nor its verified social media accounts. In addition, DeSantis has not publicly addressed the purported claim. “This story is untrue,” DeSantis’ Deputy Press Secretary Jeremy Redfern denied the claim’s validity in an email to Check Your Fact. A keyword search reveals the claim stems from a March 26 article published by the website “Real Raw News.” A disclaimer included on the site’s “About Us” page indicates it contains “humor, parody, and satire.” (RELATED: Did Ron DeSantis Say He Will Not Let Trump Be Extradited To New York If Indicted?) The latest article is also a follow-up to a Feb. 3 piece published by the site purporting DeSantis was previously denied entry to Guantanamo Bay when he expressed interest in watching a military tribunal. The snub supposedly angered DeSantis’ spokesperson Pushaw because he had made an unannounced visit to the military base in August 2021 with no issues. This is not the first time DeSantis has been the subject of misinformation on social media. Check Your Fact recently debunked a claim alleging former President Donald Trump called the Florida governor a “RINO.”
