  • Fact Check: This ISN'T the Ghazipur landfill on fire! It's an old clip from a different dump yard The Bhalswa dumpsite is in the northern part of the capital city, while the Ghazipur landfill, which was engulfed in a fire recently, is located in East Delhi. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The video dates back to April 2022 and shows the Bhalaswa landfill in Delhi on fire. The fire that broke out in Delhi’s Ghazipur landfill on Sunday, April 21, was nearly extinguished by Wednesday, with light rains also aiding in containing the blaze. Now, a video showing vehicles passing by an area engulfed in violent flames has gone viral on social media. Shared widely across social media platforms, many claimed it showed the fire at the Ghazipur landfill. A Facebook user wrote, “Delhi, India. The Ghazipur landfill, which is considered the largest in India, and possibly in the world, is on fire.” Its archive can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that the viral video does not show the Ghazipur landfill on fire; rather, it dates back to April 2022 and shows the ignited Bhalaswa landfill in Delhi. OUR PROBE Reverse searching keyframes from the viral video, we came across a post on X from April 6, 2022, featuring the video. The text accompanying the video read, “Mukarba Chowk Delhi bypass, Garbage mound catch fire.” Further, we found the screengrab of the video featured in several news reports dating back to April 2022. The Times of India reported a major fire incident at the Bhalswa landfill site. Other news reports on the fire from April 2022 can be seen here and here. During the Bhalswa landfill fire, which persisted for over 10 days, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee imposed a fine of Rs 50 lakh on the Municipal Corporation of Delhi for not taking the necessary steps to prevent the fire. Delhi is home to three major landfill sites: Ghazipur, Okhla, and Bhalswa, with Ghazipur being the largest. The Bhalswa landfill, seen in the viral video, is situated in the northern part of the capital city, while the Ghazipur dumpsite, which was recently engulfed in flames, is located in the east. Thus, it’s clear that the viral video does not show the Ghazipur blaze. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
