  • Last Updated on February 12, 2025 by Neelam Singh Quick Take A social media video features a man discussing the benefits of gucci (wild) mushrooms. We fact checked and found the claim to be Mostly False. The Claim In a Facebook video by Foodiesince96, the claimant asserts that gucci mushrooms hold a prestigious status and are often featured in celebratory dishes like gucci rice at weddings. They suggest that many doctors across different specialties recommend these mushrooms to patients, citing potential benefits for individuals with breast and lung cancer. Fact Check What are gucci mushrooms? Gucci mushrooms is a species of edible fungi belonging to the Morchellaceae family. Morel mushrooms are highly prized for their distinctive appearance and rich flavor. They have a unique honeycomb-like cap with a spongy texture. Morels are available in the wild in the springtime, typically appearing in wooded areas after a period of rain. They are also cultivated commercially in some regions. Morel mushrooms are a delicacy in many cuisines and are used in a variety of dishes, including soups, sauces, risottos, and pastas. However, it’s important to properly identify morels, as some species of mushrooms look similar but may be toxic if consumed. Do doctors or dieticians recommend gucci mushrooms to their patients? Gucci mushrooms are not specifically recommended by doctors or dietitians as a staple or essential part of a diet. Morels are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Dietitians may suggest incorporating them as part of a diet due to their nutritional profile, but they are not typically use as a primary dietary recommendation. Dr. Swati Dave, PhD Food and Nutrition, advises not to believe claims that morel mushrooms can cure cancer. She says that cancer is too serious to try unproven treatments. If someone wants to eat mushrooms, they can do so once or twice a week, depending on their usual diet. She emphasises that Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is the best way to manage chronic illnesses and that no special food can perform miracles. Manasi Banduni, Sports Nutritionist explained that she doesn’t recommend gucci mushrooms to her patients. She said that cancer is a chronic disease, and the mushrooms should be in small doses, not just eaten casually. In an era of rampant food adulteration, consumers can’t be sure if they’re getting genuine gucci mushrooms or fakes, which could harm patients both health-wise and financially. Dr Saumya, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, ESIC Medical College and Hospital, Patna, said, “As a doctor, I’ve not prescribed gucci mushrooms ever to my patients. Also, mushrooms pose a threat for allergy in some people which can be dangerous especially in case of chronically ill patients.” Does consumption of gucci mushrooms help people with all types of cancer ? In 2022 study the researchers to explore whether extracts from Morchella mushrooms could be effective against colon cancer cells. They used advanced analysis techniques to identify the compounds in the mushrooms and tested their effects on colon cancer cells. The results showed that all the Morchella extracts inhibited the growth of colon cancer cells in a dose-dependent manner. They found various important compounds in Morchella, including amino acids, fatty acids, flavonoids, and others. Some of these compounds were newly discovered. However, further research is needed to fully understand and develop these findings for potential use against colon cancer. In another 2023 study the Morchella mushrooms extract was tested on different types of cancer cells and normal cells in the lab. It showed significant ability to kill cancer cells without harming normal cells. In particular, it was effective against Dalton’s lymphoma ascites and human colon cancer cells. They also tested the extract on mice and found that it helped prevent the growth of tumors and the formation of new blood vessels that feed tumors. It also promoted cell death in cancer cells. By analysing the extract, they found several important compounds that contribute to its anticancer activity. These include celastrol, convallatoxin, cucurbitacin A, and madecassic acid. Is it safe to consume gucci mushrooms directly after purchasing them from the market? No. Consuming gucchi mushrooms directly after purchasing them from the market is not safe. India is a major producer of dry morels, including Morchella Esculenta (guchi mushrooms). These mushrooms can be poisonous, if eaten raw and can cause various adverse reactions if not prepared correctly.
