CLAIM Image shows an Igbo monarch arrested over robbery and kidnapping recently. THE FINDINGS Findings by The FactCheckHub show that the claim is MISLEADING, as the incident occurred in August 2020. An earlier version of the image can be seen on Facebook here and here. Media reports by Blueprint newspaper and social blog (Yabaleft) show that the Imo State Police Command paraded a traditional ruler, Eze Andrew Okwuegbunwa, of Uba-Agwa autonomous community, alongside seven others, for allegedly kidnapping a police inspector, Oscar Mbaeri, and Louis Obodo, both from the same community. ALSO READ: How disinformation actors fuelled violence, voter apathy in Imo governorship election Imo state Commissioner of Police, Isaac Akinmoyede, revealed that the traditional ruler was arrested alongside his cousin, a pastor, and others after a botched kidnapping operation. During investigation, it was found that the monarch had provided his vehicle to the gang and received part of the ransom collected from their victims. Eze Okwuegbunwa confessed to hiring out his car to the kidnappers but claimed ignorance of their activities. The incident took place in August 2020, though the image is being republished as recent.
