  • Fact Check: Old Odisha Video Misleadingly Shared as Bengal Incident Vishvas News investigation found that the viral video is from Odisha in 2023 and is unrelated to events in West Bengal. - By: Pallavi Mishra - Published: May 2, 2024 at 03:40 PM New Delhi, Vishvas News – A viral video shows individuals hurling stones at a rally adorned with saffron flags. Some users are sharing this video, falsely claiming that these visuals are from a recent incident in West Bengal. Vishvas News investigated and found that the viral video is from Odisha and dates back to 2023. What is in the viral post? Dharmendra Ojha, a Facebook user shared the viral video on May 1, 2024, with a caption indicating that it happened in Bengal. Investigation To verify this post, we took screenshots of the video and searched them on Google Lens. This led us to a video on Times Now’s YouTube channel dated April 13, 2023. The video captured scenes similar to those in the viral clip and reported on communal violence during a Hanuman Jayanti rally in Sambalpur, Odisha. Additional sources, such as reports from Dainik Jagran and The Wire, corroborated the details of this incident in Sambalpur in April 2023. We investigated further to find out if any such incidents occurred in West Bengal recently. We found a report on the website of The Times Of India saying that there were reports of stone pelting and violence during a Ram Navami procession in West Bengal’s Purba Medinipur district, in which four people were injured. JK Vajpayee, a journalist of Dainik Jagran in West Bengal, confirmed that while the viral video did not originate from West Bengal, similar incidents did occur during Ram Navami in the state. In the end, we investigated the profile of the user who shared the viral video and found that the user Dharmendra Ojha is from Ahmedabad and has over 1000 followers. Conclusion: Vishvas News investigation found that the viral video is from Odisha in 2023 and is unrelated to events in West Bengal. - Claim Review : This video of the incident of stone throwing at a rally is from West Bengal. - Claimed By : Facebook User - Fact Check : False Know the truth!
