  • On Aug. 25, 2024, a Facebook post from the page YODA BBY ABY claimed to show a poster for an animated series titled "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice." The post suggested the series would continue the "Beetlejuice" franchise that began with the 1988 movie and premiere on MAX streaming service in January 2025. According to the post, the animated series would star actress Jenna Ortega. In the Facebook post, which had amassed 16,000 likes and 1,500 comments as of this writing, the marketing poster showed the character Beetlejuice — who the original Tim Burton-directed movie describes as a freelance "bio-exorcist" — alongside a girl who appeared to be the character Lydia Deetz wearing a red spiderweb tunic and purple eye makeup. The caption accompanying the post read: BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE ANIMATED SERIES!!! Get ready for the ultimate afterlife adventure with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice The Animated Series, coming to MAX in January 2025! Stephen Ouimette, Alyson Court, Tabitha St. Germain, and Elizabeth Hanna return to reprise their iconic roles, joined by Jenna Ortega as the voice of Astrid Deetz in this thrilling continuation where Beetlejuice, Lydia, and her daring daughter Astrid stir up chaos between the living and the dead. With pranks, spooks, and a whole lot of laughs, this is one ride to the Neitherworld you won't want to miss! (YODA BBY ABY/Facebook) Some readers interpreted the post as an announcement for a reboot of the original animation television series "Beetlejuice," which aired from 1989 to 1991. One commenter wrote, "Wow talk [about] a blast from the past. i used to love watching Beetlejuice cartoon." However, the claim was fabricated. There was no evidence of such a series coming to MAX in 2025. The Facebook page that shared the poster, @YODA BBY ABY, has made dozens of similarly fake movie posters. The page's bio says, "I'm just here to eat frogs, lift rocks and be satirical. The page is 100% satire and fake news." Also, the bio lists the website screenslant.com, which displays the banner, "FAKE NEWS - SATIRE - AND MORE." The original "Beetlejuice" animated series aired its first four seasons on ABC before moving to Fox Kids. As of this writing, neither MAX nor any other broadcast or streaming network had announced plans to relaunch or reboot the animated series. If such a project was in the works, entertainment news outlets would have reported on it. That was not the case. A Google reverse-image search of the in-question poster did not find any reputable news sources confirming the alleged animated series with a 2025 release. However, retail websites advertising a reissue of the original, real animated series as a DVD box set — as well as the Warner Bros. website — feature similar imagery. The false rumor about the "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" animated series surfaced as fans anticipated a long-awaited movie sequel directed by Burton with the same name ("Beetlejuice Beetlejuice"). That movie is set to be released Sept. 6, 2024. According to the new film's synopsis on IMDb: After a family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia's life is turned upside down when her teenage daughter, Astrid, accidentally opens the portal to the Afterlife. Ortega is playing Astrid Deetz in the upcoming film. A search of her IMDb page revealed no previous or upcoming roles in a "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" animated series. We've previously debunked similar fake posters, including one claiming to be an official advertisement for a live-action, limited series based on the 2001 animated film "Spirited Away." For background, here is why we alert readers to rumors created by sources that call their output humorous or satirical.
