  • Last Updated on May 22, 2023 by Neelam Singh Quick Take A social media post claims that aluminum is the biggest cause of Alzheimer’s disease. We fact-checked and found the claim to be False. Age, not aluminum is the biggest cause of Alzheimer’s disease. The Claim According to a Facebook post, aluminum is purported to be the primary cause of Alzheimer’s disease. We have attached the screenshot of the post below: Fact Check Is aluminum the biggest cause of Alzheimer’s disease? No evidence confirms that aluminum is the biggest cause of Alzheimer’s disease. The National Institue on Aging website informs that age is the most important known risk factor of Alzheimer’s disease. The exact cause of Alzheimer’s Disease is still unknown. The current research suggests that a combination of factors including age, genetics, environmental influences, and lifestyle choices causes Alzheimer’s disease. There is no established direct link between dietary intake of aluminum and Alzheimer’s Disease. For instance, we do not know whether individuals who regularly consume aluminum through certain medications are at an higher risk of developing the disease. The Alzheimer’s Society website informs that we need better studies to support concerns that exposure to metals through equipment use, food, or water contributes to a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. In their extensive research, THIP MEDIA thoroughly investigated cooking in Aluminum foil cause Alzheimer’s disease. The findings revealed a lack of clinical trials to substantiate the claim as accurate. Additionally, the findings also highlights that consuming excessive amounts of aluminum through the diet may have some association with the development of the disease. But further research is needed to fully understand this relationship. Neurologist Dr. Pawan Raj, explains that ‘there is some indirect evidence linking elevated levels of aluminum to the development of dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s dementia. Studies conducted on rats and mice have demonstrated that aluminum tends to accumulate in specific regions of the brain, including the cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum.’ In conclusion, we need more evidence to understand whether consuming aluminum through regular diet can cause Alzheimer’s disease.
