  • Fact Check: Video of paper plane gliding from stands to goalpost is not from Qatar World Cup With the Fifa World Cup going on in full swing, a video showing a man launching a paper plane from the galleries to the football field has gone viral on social media with many claiming that the video was shot in Qatar. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The video was shot during a UEFA Nations League in June 2022 in Munich, Germany. The 2022 FIFA World Cup's quarter-finals will begin on December 9. Brazil, Argentina, France, England, Netherlands, Portugal, Croatia, and Morocco will now compete to reach the semi-finals. As fans gear up for an exciting set of matches, on social media, a video of one particular fan has been shared with much excitement. The video shows a man launching a paper plane from the galleries to the football field. As the plane glided through the air, fans around cheered it on. Finally, the plane landed inside the goalpost. Those sharing the video claimed it was from Qatar. An archived version of such a post can be seen here. AFWA's investigation found that this video is from a June 2022 UEFA Nations League match between Germany and England at Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany. AFWA PROBE A keyword search on the internet led us to a news report on a Greek website called Videoman from June 14. It contained the same video. Per the report, on June 7, during a UEFA Nations League match between Germany and England, a fan threw a paper plane to the ground at the Allianz Arena Stadium in Munich, Germany. Just after the start of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, this video was widely shared on social media. At that time, NDTV, and Indiatimes reported that this video was shot during the UEFA Nations League match between Germany and England. On November 26, News 18 also reported on the video, with the headline, "Watch: When a Bored Football Fan Scored 'Airplane Goal' With a Paper Aircraft." On December 1, USA TODAY Sports also shared the same video on its Twitter account, and captioned it: "This guy has aim! A fan turned his admissions ticket into a paper airplane at the match between Germany and England at Munich's Allianz Arena." Following this, we looked for photos of the stadium on Google Maps We then compared the Allianz Arena stadium's roof and reserve bench area's structure with the viral video. The similarities were striking. Thus, we concluded that the viral video is not from the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. It's a months-old video from the UEFA Nations League in Munich, Germany.
