India Today Fact Check
The video was from Mexico City and predates Nahel's death by weeks.
French cities have experienced widespread riots following the fatal police shooting of 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk on June 27. Amid this, a video circulating on social media showed a huge crowd flooding what appears to be a city centre. Allegedly, this crowd had gathered in Nanterre, France, for the teen’s funeral.
India Today, in its investigation, found that the video was from Mexico City, the capital of Mexico.
OUR PROBE
With the help of a reverse search, we found the same video shared by several social media accounts in the first week of June. According to these posts in Spanish, the video was from legendary Argentine rockers Los Fabulosos Cadillacs’ concert. The music group’s official Instagram account also posted different footage of the crowd from the same location.
According to media reports, on June 3, a crowd of about 300,000 gathered at Mexico City’s central square to attend a free concert by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs.
On June 4, Mexico City mayor Claudia Sheinbaum also tweeted a video of the crowd attending the concert.
A comparison between a high-resolution version of the viral video and Google Street View of the area confirmed that the video was indeed captured in Z³calo, the main square in Mexico City.
While we couldn't independently verify if the footage was from the concert, it is unquestionably clear that the video was not filmed in France but in Mexico. Furthermore, the video predates Nahel Merzouk’s killing.
