  • FACT CHECK: Did Kari Lake Send This Tweet About Donald Trump Following The 2016 Election? An image shared on Facebook purports Arizona Republican gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake published a tweet calling former President Donald Trump “obese” following his 2016 election win. Verdict: False There is no evidence suggesting Lake published the purported tweet. Fact Check: An Arizona judge rejected Lake’s claim that she lost the 2022 gubernatorial race due to election misconduct, according to The New York Times. The former television anchor ran for governor of Arizona on the Republican ticket during the 2022 midterm elections, receiving an endorsement from Trump in late September, according to AZ Central. The Facebook post purports Lake called Trump “obese” in a tweet following his 2016 election win. “Congratulations to the obese American public for getting one of their own into the White House, the fattest U.S. president since Taft,” the purported tweet reads. The claim is false. There are no credible news reports suggesting Lake made the remark. Likewise, the purported claim is not mentioned on Lake’s website or her verified social media accounts. In addition, Trump has not publicly commented on the claim. Although Lake did not publish the purported tweet calling Trump “obese,” she did react to his 2016 election win on social media. The gubernatorial candidate shared a statement on her Facebook and Twitter pages saying she “sensed [Trump] wants to try to bring this country together” following his victory speech. “Donald Trump just delivered a very solid victory speech. Sadly, I think many of the people who dislike him, and are upset, did not hear it. I hope it gets replayed tomorrow because I sense he wants to try to bring this country together after a difficult campaign,” her statement read.
