  • Fact Check: Video of Molotov cocktails being hurled is from Palestine, not from recent protests in Pakistan A video of men allegedly hurling Molotov cocktails at police cannons and jeeps has been making the rounds on social media, with many claiming that the video is of the recent attack between the Pakistan Police and supporters of former Pakistan PM Imran Khan. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from Palestine’s Ramallah city. It is not related to clashes between Imran Khan supporters and Pakistan police. Pakistan police withdrew from the Lahore residence of former Prime Minister Imran Khan on March 15, after failing to arrest him for corruption charges. This temporary relief came after clashes between law enforcement and Khan's supporters outside his residence in Zaman Park, which lasted nearly 24 hours. As Khan’s residence remained a battleground for several hours, images and videos of the riots started to flood social media. Among them, is a video that contains different clippings of men allegedly hurling Molotov cocktails at police cannons and jeeps. Those sharing the video claimed these were the supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) attacking police. The archived versions of similar posts can be seen here, here, and here. India Today found that the video is old and from Palestine, and not related to the recent political developments in Pakistan. AFWA PROBE The video in question contains a watermark that reads "Kareem Khamysa". We then searched for this name on Facebook and found multiple videos with the same watermark uploaded on the profile of Palestinian journalist Kareem Khamysa, According to Khamysa'a Facebook bio, he works with the Palestine Times. While we couldn't trace the video in question to Khamysa's account, however, we found similar other videos of protestors throwing Molotov cocktails at Israeli forces. We then reached out to Khamysa, who confirmed that all the clips seen in the video were shot by him in Ramallah city of Palestine. However, he couldn’t confirm the exact date and time of the footage contained in the video. We further did a reverse search of the video’s keyframes with relevant keywords in Arabic and found one of the clips shared on March 5, 2020, by the verified Facebook page of Palestine based media company "Alarabiya Palestine". According to the description, the video shows young men attacking Israeli forces in the Al-Tira neighbourhood in Ramallah. The other clips seen in the viral video were uploaded to the YouTube channel “Omar N AbuRub” on January 23, 2022. All the clips, here also, carried a watermark of Khamysa’s name. It's clear that the video in question is from Palestine, and not related to the recent protests by PTI supporters in Pakistan in wake of Imran Khan’s impending arrest.
