  • A video showing veteran politician and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Champai Soren speaking about Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren is being shared on social media platforms. In the clip, Soren said he would join Gandhi for the Bharat Jodo Yatra and meet Hemant Soren. He also praised Hemant Soren and his work in Jharkhand. Those sharing have claimed that Soren wants to return to the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, his former party. This post recorded 123.5K views at the time of writing this story. (Archives of similar claims can be found here and here.) Is the claim true?: The claim is false. The video dates back to February when Soren was sworn is as Jharkhand CM when Hemant Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Soren has denied all rumours about his return to his former party. What we found: We divided the video into multiple screenshots and ran a Google reverse image on some of them. We came across a video by news agency Asian News International (ANI) from 2 February. It noted, "We will participate in Rahul Gandhi's 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra'... He (Hemant Soren) is a leader of our party, he has started many schemes for the development of the state and he will be successful in his fight for justice." (sic.) The video dates back to when Soren was sworn in as the CM of Jharkhand when Hemant Soren was arrested by the ED, reported The Hindu. Later, Soren joined the BJP in August, following the present Jharkhand CM's release, reported NDTV. This made it clear that it not related to the recently concluded Jharkhand state assembly elections on 23 November. The JMM-Congress alliance won the election making Hemant Soren, the CM again. Recently, Soren has denied all rumours alleging his return to JMM, reported the Times of India. Similarly, Soren wrote the same on X. He stated, "Some misleading rumours are being spread about me on social media as part of an agenda by making an old video viral. This was done at the time of elections also. Please avoid such false rumours." Conclusion: An old video is being shared to falsely claim that Soren wants to return to JMM.
