  • Fact Check: Japanese fans DID NOT trash stadiums at 2022 FIFA World Cup, viral video played in reverse A video of Japanese fans has gone viral on social media, with the claim that they took trash from a bag and dumped it around a stadium. AFWA's investigation has found that the viral video was played in reverse. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video was played in reverse. The original video shows Japan fans cleaning up a Qatar stadium after their World Cup win over Germany. Fans of the Japanese squad have been winning hearts at the ongoing 2022 FIFA World Cup for staying behind after matches to help clean up stadiums. However, a video that has been shared by many online seems to contradict this behaviour. It shows people taking the rubbish out of a bag and leaving it littered around a stadium. Those sharing it claimed that this was what Japanese fans had been doing in Qatar. At the time of filing this story, one such video poster by a verified Twitter user called Andy Ha had received more than 9000 shares. The archived versions of similar posts can be seen here, here, and here. AFWA’s investigation found that the viral video was played in reverse. The original video shows Japanese fans cleaning a stadium after Japan played against Germany at the World Cup. AFWA probe At the 17-second mark in the viral video, we noticed a man in the background climbing stairs backwards. Multiple other people are also seen walking backwards in the viral clip. This hinted that the video could have been shared in reverse. We further did a keyword search on Twitter and found similar videos shared on November 24. However, unlike the viral clip, in these videos, the same group of people could be seen picking trash scattered around the gallery and placing them in garbage bags. The video was also tweeted by Alkass, a Qatar-based group of sports channels, on its official Twitter account. As per Alkass and several others, the video shows Japan fans cleaning the stadium after a match with Germany in the ongoing FIFA World Cup. Japan had a 2-1 win against Germany at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha on November 23. Posts featuring Japanese football fans cleaning up stadiums started doing the rounds on social media after the tournament’s opening match between Qatar and Ecuador at Al Bayt Stadium. After Japan’s stunning victory over Germany as well as its loss to Costa Rica, the fans were spotted cleaning the stadium. It is, hence, clear that the viral video is reversed and does not show soccer fans from Japan littering a stadium during the FIFA World Cup 2022.
