Yes, but this video is from 2023 An old video of Cyclone Michaung's impact in Chennai in 2023 was falsely shared as visuals of heavy rain battering the city. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from December 2023 when Cyclone Michaung wreaked havoc in Chennai. Heavy rains brought Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu to a standstill on October 15 and 16, resulting in schools and colleges shutting down, frequent power outages, train and flight cancellations, and traffic congestion on waterlogged streets. Amid this, a video of youngsters wading through waist-deep water on a street. They appeared to be carrying their bags on a mattress. Several other groups of people could be seen doing the same nearby. Many social media users and news outlets shared the clip, claiming it showed the effects of the recent heavy rains lashing Chennai. Sharing it on Facebook, one person wrote, “Present situation in Satyabhama Eng. college, Chennai.” India Today Fact Check, however, found that this video is from December 2023, when Cyclone Michaung wreaked havoc in Chennai. Our Probe Reverse searching keyframes from the viral video led us to a longer version of the clip, uploaded to a YouTube channel on December 15, 2023. The description stated that this video showed Chennai flooding amid Cyclone Michaung. Per news reports from December 2023, Cyclone Michaung left a trail of destruction in Chennai, claiming at least 18 lives in Tamil Nadu. The cyclone made landfall over Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore on December 5, 2023, before moving to Tamil Nadu. At the time, several people shared videos of flooding at Sathyabama University in Chennai amid the cyclone and its students carrying their bags and other stuff on a waterlogged road in front of the campus. Did the university campus flood recently as well? On X, one person shared another video of the college, claiming that it was shot on October 16. While rainwater could be seen on roads, there was no flooding. India Today Fact Check, however, could not independently verify the date and time this video was actually shot. On October 16, the fact-checking unit of the Tamil Nadu government also shared a post on X stating that the viral clip was from 2023 when Cyclone Michaung hit the city. It is noteworthy that drone footage of the city ( https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=885409616586676 ) showed several streets of Chennai, waterlogged due to excessive rain, disrupting daily life.
