  • Fact Check: Video of Lucknow road cave-in FALSELY passed off as that from Gujarat amid assembly polls A video showing a road caving in UP has been shared several times on social media with claims that it shows Gujarat road. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is not from Gujarat, but from Uttar Pradesh, where a road caved in because of a damaged sewer line in the state’s capital Lucknow. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrapped up campaigning for the Bharatiya Janata Party on December 3, the day that marked the end of campaigning for the second phase of the Gujarat Assembly Elections. The usual bipolar contest between Congress and the BJP in the state has turned into a triangular one with the Aam Aadmi Party campaigning heavily in the state this time. Amid all this, a video has been shared by many on social media with the purpose of condemning the incumbent BJP’s rule in the state. It shows a road that can be seen caving in, forming a pit. Those sharing it wrote captions like, “Pathetic 27 yrs of Modi model," referring to the victory streak that BJP has maintained in Gujarat. Archives of such posts can be found here and here. AFWA found that this video is not from the poll-bound state but from Uttar Pradesh. AFWA Probe A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to a December 2 tweet by Y Sathish Reddy, the social media convener for the Telangana Rashtra Samithi that was recently renamed as the Bharat Rashtra Samithi. The tweet featured the same viral clip with the caption: “While Yogi is busy meditating in Gujarat, the roads in Uttar Pradesh continue to break down.” An Amar Ujala photojournalist also tweeted the same video clip. In the responses under this tweet, we found a tweet from Gyan Tiwari, a BJP MLA from Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, who said that this incident was caused by a sewer line bursting. With the help of this clue, we found a Hindustan Times report regarding an incident where a portion of a road in Lucknow’s Vikas Nagar caved in. The report stated that a part of the Mama Crossing to Gulacheen Mandir route in Vikas Nagar caved in on November 28, forming a pit and affecting traffic. It further mentioned that the trunk line of the sewer line for Jal Nigam, which passes through the middle of this road, was damaged. Leakage in the underground sewage line eroded the soil below the road, resulting in the cave-in. According to another report, the pit formed was around 25 feet deep. The report featured a different video of the damaged road featuring UP Police barricades around the hole. One of the news reports also stated that two people fell in the pit, adding that they were not injured. A few reportedly also stated that it was the third such instance in the area in the last three years. A comparison of the viral video with a different video of the incident tweeted by UP Tak can be seen below. Thus, it is clear that this video is not from Gujarat at all.
