It has nothing to do with the Israel-Hamas conflict. A heartbreaking image of a dead man surrounded by several dogs, some of them cozying up to him, has gone viral on social media. Allegedly, this man was killed in Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip. The caption with the photo reads, “Dogs bid farewell to their owner after he was killed by the Israeli occupation forces in the ongoing massacres against displaced Palestinians in the Gaza Strip...21 October 2024”. Believing the claim to be true, netizens are expressing sorrow by commenting broken heart emojis on the viral photo. Archived version of the viral photo can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that the photo is of a homeless Yemeni man who died in 2020. It has nothing to do with the Israel-Hamas conflict. Our Probe A reverse image search led us to an Arabic report of Al Jazeera, published on October 20, 2020. The report carries the viral picture which established that it is old and not from the Israel-Hamas war. The report says that the man seen in the photo was a Yemeni citizen Ismail Hadi who died on the street in Ibb governorate in 2020. Hadi was known for his generosity towards stray dogs as he used to feed them despite being homeless. After his sudden death in October 2020, stray dogs were photographed gathering around him in affection. Reportedly, the strays were not allowing the people to touch the body of the man. As per the report of a web portal ‘Alwatan Voice”, the man died of a sudden heart attack. The news piece further says that Hadi would collect the leftover food from restaurants and feed it to the stray dogs every day. Many Yemeni journalists and activists shared the viral photo on social media at that time and mourned the death of dog-lover Hadi. Some also shared the video of the incident. Hence the claim with the viral photo is untrue. The photo is not from Gaza but Yemen and the man seen in it didn’t die in Israeli airstrikes.
