India Today Fact Check
The video is at least a decade old and shows a different incident in Bahrain.
Israel, in the midst of its ongoing conflict with Hamas, has reportedly undertaken the evacuation of several of its embassies across the Middle East, including in Bahrain, Jordan, and Morocco. Now, a video allegedly showing a mob setting fire to the country’s embassy in Bahrain's capital Manama has been widely shared.
In the video, a mob could be seen carrying Molotov cocktails, running toward a building, and subsequently setting it on fire. One X user, while sharing the viral video, wrote, "People of Bahrain tried to burn the Israeli embassy in Manama." An archived version of this post can be seen here.
India Today found that the viral video is neither recent nor does it show an attack on the Israeli embassy in Bahrain.
Our Probe
Had the Israeli embassy been set on fire in Bahrain, it would undoubtedly have made headlines in news reports. In the absence of any credible reports suggesting that, however, we reverse-searched the video’s keyframes. This led us to a Facebook post from November 2012. This post contained a screenshot of a similar building on fire, with a caption indicating it is from an incident of besieging and burning a police station on November 5, 2023.
Additionally, we found a longer video on YouTube shared by a channel called The Revolution Media Centre in Bahrain in December 2012. This video contained the viral clip, making it clear that it had nothing to do with the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
According to the video's caption, it showed demonstrators attacking a police station on Sitra Island, south of the capital, Manama. It further suggested that the attack is believed to have taken place on November 3, 2012.
Bahrain witnessed unrest in 2011, led by Shiite protesters, against the Sunni Al Khalifa family's rule, which has governed the island for about 250 years. A report by Al Mayadeen noted that dozens of individuals had attacked a police station in Sitra, Bahrain, using Molotov cocktails. Many of those responsible for the attack on the police station were arrested and subsequently tried by law enforcement agencies.
Thus, in conclusion, it’s clear that this video does not show an attack on the Israeli embassy in Bahrain.
