  • Fact Check: This isn't from Spain! Old stabbing video from Turkey viral with anti-immigrant spin India Today Fact Check found that the video is from Turkey, not Barcelona, and dates back to February 2023. Both men seen in the video were Turkish. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from Aydin, Turkey, and dates back to February 2023. Both men in the video were Turkish citizens. A chilling video of a man stabbing another man's face with a knife is being shared with anti-immigrant fearmongering on social media. Allegedly the assailant was a North African migrant and the victim was a Spaniard. On Facebook and X, the video was shared with allegations like: "A North-African migrant stabbed to death a Spaniard in the middle of Barcelona. The video is heartbreaking to watch. Tomorrow this could be you or your beloved ones. These criminal aliens are literally invading our countries in front of our own eyes and wreaking terror among our cities but yet we are not taking action." The archive of such a post can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that the video is from Turkey and dates back to February 2023. Both men were Turkish. OUR PROBE Upon reverse-searching keyframes from the viral video, we came across several Turkish news reports from February 2023 that featured screengrabs of the video. Per these reports, the incident took place in Aydin's Efeler district in Turkey. Some Turkish reports referred to the attacker as TE and the victim as AY. They noted that TE kept stabbing AY even after being confronted by witnesses who were recording the incident. The reports added that both men were accused in multiple criminal cases. Reportedly, the assailant, TE, was arrested by the police later, and the victim, who was rushed to the hospital, succumbed to injuries a month later. None of the news reports mentioned any involvement with migrants. Subsequent searches with advanced keywords led us to reports quoting Aydin's governor, who debunked claims that a Turkish citizen was attacked by a Syrian man. Reportedly, the governor clarified that both the persons involved were Turkish citizens. The Presidential Directorate of Communications Center for Combating Disinformation of Turkey also stated that there was no migrant angle to the incident. Thus, it’s clear that a video from Turkey was shared with false information to create anti-immigrant hysteria in Spain.
