  • FACT CHECK: Did The U.S. Military Hang Bridget Brink For Treason? A post shared on Facebook purports the Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink was hanged after being convicted of treason following a brief military tribunal. Verdict: False The claim stems from a satirical website. A U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG) spokesperson confirmed the information was false. Fact Check: Brink called Russia’s mobilization of military reserves a “failure” and a “sign of weakness” via Twitter in September, Reuters reported. The ambassador also stated the U.S. would not recognize “Russia’s claim to purportedly annexed Ukrainian territory,” according to the outlet. The Facebook post claims Brink was purportedly hung to death for treason following a military tribunal held at Guantanamo Bay. Photographic and video evidence of Brink “surrendering $2.2 billion in American currency to Ukrainian Ministry of Defense official Lieutenant General Serhiy Shaptala,” was shared during the trial, the post states. Brink was also allegedly overheard laughing and calling Americans “clueless” about the full extent of U.S. aid being given to Ukraine, the post claims. The claim is false. There are no credible news reports to support the claim. Likewise, there is no mention of the claim on Brink, Navy JAG, or the State Department’s verified social media accounts or their respective websites. “This is misinformation,” Navy JAG spokesperson Patricia Babb said of the claim in an email to Check Your Fact. (RELATED: No, The Military Did Not Execute Jen O’Malley) A keyword search reveals the claim stems from an Oct. 17 article published on the website, “Real Raw News.” A disclaimer included on the website’s “About Us” page indicates it contains “humor, parody, and satire.” Check Your Fact has also contacted a State Department spokesperson for comment and will update this piece accordingly if one is received. The article appears to be a continuation of a second piece that appeared earlier in October 2022, which claimed the ambassador had been arrested following a months-long investigation.
