  • Fact Check: NOT extremist mob attacking disabled man in Punjab, this 2022 video shows family dispute in UP According to reports, the two men in the video were relatives and the fight was over property. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video was from March 2022 and shows a family dispute over property in the Gautam Buddh Nagar district of UP. A video of a physically disabled man being assaulted by a man and a woman with heavy wooden sticks has gone viral on social media. On June 26, the Twitter account "South Asian Human Rights Watch" which has over 1.2 lakh followers, shared the video claiming that this incident happened in Punjab and that the man was assaulted by an extremist group. The account stated, "In a shocking display of human rights violation, a distressing video has emerged from the Indian state of Punjab, revealing a horrific incident of brutality inflicted upon a helpless man by an extremist mob." Its archived version can be seen here. India Today found that the video was not from Punjab at all. It captured a family dispute in Jewar in the Gautam Buddh Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh. Our Probe With the help of a keyword search, we found the same video uploaded to NDTV’s YouTube channel on March 29, 2022. According to the NDTV report, the incident took place in Jewar, a town and a nagar panchayat in the suburbs of Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh. Gajendra Singh, 52, the disabled man, had reportedly leased property from his relative Jugendra Singh to run a school. Jugendra, 55, was the one seen attacking him in the video. Additional Director General of Police of Greater Noida Vishal Pandey told reporters at the time, “Due to the Covid-19 lockdown, [Gajendra] couldn’t afford the expenses.” When the school was shut during the pandemic, Jugendra reportedly rented the property out to other tenants, leading to a disagreement between the two parties. According to the Times of India, Anjani Kumar Singh, the SHO at Jewar police station said at the time: “Last week, Gajendra’s son Shiva went to the house and had a quarrel with the occupants. He also asked them to vacate the place.” This escalated into a heated argument between Gajendra and Jugendra, and the two accused subsequently attacked the elderly man, beating him and vandalising his two-wheeler, the police said. India Today reported that a case was registered against the man and the woman, reportedly a couple, who were subsequently arrested. The couple were residents of the Charoli village in Jewar. It is hence clear that the video in circulation is from Uttar Pradesh and not Punjab, and it shows a family dispute and not extremist violence.
