  • Last Updated on May 9, 2023 by Neelam Singh Quick Take A social media post claims that if anyone encounters a snake bite or a scorpion sting, they can use plantain leaf to cure it. We fact-checked this and found this claim to be Mostly False. The Claim A Facebook post with the caption, “Home Remedy For snakes bite,” shares the video of a woman stating that plantain plant is a remedy for venomous snake bites and scorpion stings. Fact Check What are the beneficial properties of a plantain leaf? Plantain leaves have a long history of use in traditional medicine for a variety of health conditions. It has various potentially beneficial properties, such as: - Anti-inflammatory: Plantain leaves contain compounds that have been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, which may help reduce inflammation and swelling in the body. - Antioxidant: Plantain leaves contain high levels of antioxidants, which can help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. - Wound healing: The leaves of plantain contain compounds that may help promote wound healing and reduce the risk of infection. - Respiratory health: Plantain leaves have traditionally been used to treat respiratory conditions such as coughs, colds, and asthma. - Digestive health: Plantain leaves may have a soothing effect on the digestive system and have been used to treat conditions such as diarrhea and constipation. - Skin health: The anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties of plantain leaves may also benefit skin health and help to soothe skin irritations. Can plantain leaf cure snake bites and scorpion stings? Not exactly. There is some traditional use of plantain leaf as a remedy for snake bites and scorpion stings. Various plants have been used in treating snake bites. However, there is limited scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of these in treating these conditions. The Brazilian Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences analyzed the anti-snake venom properties of medicinal plants. It evaluated that certain plants are an extremely rich source of active phytoconstituents with an established anti-ophidic potential against one or more snake venoms. However, it also stated that it gives a perception for future research and proposes validation as anti-ophidic agents to design potent inhibitors and/or herbal medicines against snake venoms. Additionally, while plantain leaves may have anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties that could potentially help to reduce the symptoms of a scorpion sting, it is important to note that scorpion stings can be potentially life-threatening, and immediate medical attention should be sought. Scorpion stings are mostly life-threatening but can be fatal in some cases. A study evaluated scorpion stings and observed that antivenoms are necessary. It is important to note that while plantain leaves have potential health benefits, more research is needed to fully understand their effectiveness and safety. As with any herbal remedy, it is important to consult with a doctor before using plantain leaves for medicinal purposes. Snake bites and scorpion stings can be potentially life-threatening, and immediate medical attention should be sought in case of a venomous bite or sting.
