The video was shot during a clash between Israeli forces and Palestinians in May 2021.
Hundreds of Israelis and Palestinians have reportedly died in an escalating conflict between Israel and the militant organisation Hamas that launched an attack on Israel through land, sea, and air. As photos and videos of violence in the region flooded social media, one particular clip was widely shared.
It showed a burqa-clad woman pelting stones in the midst of an unrest. Those sharing the video alleged that she is a Palestinian woman resisting Israeli forces with stones amid the ongoing conflict. The video is being shared with hashtags like “AlAqsaflood”, the name given to the operation that Hamas launched in Israel.
The video, viral on both Facebook and Twitter, was shared with captions like, “Brave Palestinian women resisted Israeli forces with stones. I stand with Palestine”. The archive of one such post can be seen here.
India Today found that the video was shot during a clash between Israeli forces and Palestinians in May 2021. It’s not from the ongoing conflict.
Our Probe
With the help of the InVid reverse search, we found that the viral video was uploaded by an Instagram user on January 8, 2022. While the Instagram post did not contain information about the whereabouts of the video, it made it clear that the incident predated the ongoing conflict by more than a year at least.
Using keywords in Arabic, we found the video in a YouTube report by the Arabic media outlet “Alghad TV”, uploaded on May 18, 2021. In the YouTube report, the viral video appears around the 25-second mark. According to the video’s title, the Palestinian woman threw stones at Israeli forces in Nablus during a clash. The longer, uncropped version of the video shows the woman with several other people pelting stones. Palestinian flags can also be seen in the backdrop.
An Associated Press report from the time said that clashes took place between Palestinians and Israeli forces in Nablus on May 18, 2021, during which, protestors pelted stones and burned tires.
Thus, it’s clear that the viral video, while showing a Palestinian woman hurling stones at Israeli forces, is not from the ongoing conflict but predates it by more than two years.
