  • FACT CHECK: Is Trump The First To Win New Hampshire Primary 3 Times? After former President Donald Trump won the New Hampshire primary his campaign shared a clip from Fox News Anchor Bret Baier claiming that Trump is the first person ever to win the New Hampshire Primary three times. “Donald Trump is now the only person ever to win the New Hampshire primary three times!” pic.twitter.com/09n0crLwow — Trump War Room (@TrumpWarRoom) January 24, 2024 Verdict: False The claim is inaccurate. Nixon won the New Hampshire primary in 1960, 1968 and 1972. Fact Check: Trump won the New Hampshire primary with 54.6% of the vote against former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley who received 43.2% of the vote, CNN reported. Haley told voters after the results that she will remain in the race as the primary heads to South Carolina. A post shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, shared a clip of Baier commentating on the results of the primary. Baier said Trump is the only person to win the New Hampshire primary three times. The claim is inaccurate. The Associated Press reported that Trump is the first person to win the New Hampshire primary three consecutive times. Former President Richard Nixon also won that Republican New Hampshire Primary three times, however, the wins were nonconsecutive. In 1960 he won with 89.3% of the vote, according to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. He would later lose the general election to John F. Kennedy, according to the Library of Congress. In 1968 Nixon returned to win New Hampshire with 77.6%. Nixon would then go on to win the presidency. Four years later in 1972 as an incumbent, President Nixon won the New Hampshire Republican Primary for a third time, according to Britannica. He received 67.9% of the votes against two challengers Paul McCloskey and John Ashbrook. (RELATED: Did Times Square Billboards Call Ceasefire Anti-Semitic?) A Fox News spokesperson told Check Your Fact that “Baier clarified this last night by saying Trump is the first person to do this in the modern era” and linked to a video Baier’s follow-up reporting. “In the modern era, the former president is the only candidate to win the New Hampshire primary three times. I had Nixon historians call me and say, wait a second, Richard Nixon won in 72, 68, and 60. So you’ve got to make sure,” Baier said. Check Your Fact has contacted the Trump campaign for comment and will update this piece if a response is provided.
