  • Last Updated on January 28, 2025 by Dr Priyamvada Quick Take A social media post claims that a finger pose can reveal blocked arteries and improve circulation. We did the fact check and determined this claim is false. The Claim A viral Instagram post claims that if you hold your fingers in a specific position and feel pain in the front part of your forearm, it indicates blocked arteries or poor blood circulation. The post further claims that repeating this movement 30 times every morning can clear arterial blockages and improve circulation. Fact Check Who is the claimant? The claimant, Firoz Morkas, is a self-proclaimed healer and wellness trainer without recognised medical qualifications. Despite using “Dr.” as a title, there is no evidence that he holds a medical or scientific degree. His expertise lies in alternative practices like aura reading, chakra healing, and numerology, which are not scientifically proven healthcare methods. Therefore, his claims about diagnosing or treating arterial blockages lack medical credibility. Can a finger pose diagnose blocked arteries? No, a finger pose cannot diagnose blocked arteries. Arterial blockages occur due to plaque buildup inside blood vessels, restricting blood flow. Diagnosis requires medical imaging techniques like angiography, Doppler ultrasound, or CT scans. Pain in the forearm from a finger position is more likely due to muscle tension, nerve compression, or tendon strain than blocked arteries. Dr Almas Fatma, MBBS, Diploma in Family Medicine, PG in Digital Health, and General Physician from Navi Mumbai, says, “No, a finger pose cannot diagnose blocked arteries. Arterial blockages develop due to plaque buildup and can only be detected through medical tests like angiography, Doppler ultrasound, or CT scans. Pain in the forearm from a hand position is not a reliable indicator of circulation problems. If someone suspects poor blood flow, they should consult a doctor rather than relying on unproven methods.” On a related note, there are claims that eating guava daily can clean the arteries. However, this remains unproven. What causes pain in the forearm when holding this pose? The pain is likely caused by: - Muscle strain from holding fingers in an unnatural position. - Nerve compression or joint stiffness. - Underlying conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome or tendonitis. These factors are unrelated to circulation or arterial blockages. Does blood circulation affect how muscles feel? Yes, blood circulation plays a role in muscle health, but pain or discomfort in muscles is not always linked to poor circulation. Poor blood flow can cause symptoms like cold or numb extremities (fingers and toes), but short-term pain from holding a pose is typically due to muscle fatigue or strain. Does this exercise improve blood circulation? Not really. This pose does not improve blood circulation. While regular physical activity promotes circulation, simply holding your fingers in a specific position does not significantly impact arterial health. Activities like brisk walking, yoga, or swimming are far more effective for maintaining good circulation. Can exercises “clean” arteries? No, exercises cannot “clean” arteries. Once plaque builds up in arteries, it does not dissolve through movement alone. Lifestyle changes such as a diet for healthy arteries, engaging in regular exercise, and taking prescribed medications can help manage arterial health. Severe blockages may require medical interventions, such as procedures to widen or bypass blocked arteries. Dr Subhaargh Kumar, Consultant Cardiologist at The Five Elements Medical Centre, Gurugram, offers his expert opinion on the role of exercise in arterial health. He states, “No, exercise alone cannot clean arteries. While regular physical activity can strengthen the heart and improve circulation, it is not a substitute for medical treatment. Also, there is no evidence about the mentioned hand pose for cleaning arteries. Effectively managing heart health usually requires a combination of medication, lifestyle changes, and medical supervision. Patients should consult their doctors to develop a personalised care plan.” Similarly, we have come across claims that simple exercises can cure heart failure at home, but this is false. What are the real signs of blocked arteries? Blocked arteries can cause the following symptoms: - Chest pain (angina). - Shortness of breath. - Fatigue. - Dizziness. - Heart attacks or strokes in severe cases. If you experience any of these symptoms, consult a doctor instead of relying on unverified self-diagnosis methods. How can circulation and heart health be improved? Improving circulation and heart health involves: - Regular exercise: Brisk walking, jogging, or swimming improves blood flow. - Healthy eating: Foods rich in fibre, healthy fats, and antioxidants support arterial health. - Avoiding smoking: Smoking damages blood vessels and reduces oxygen delivery. - Managing stress: Chronic stress can harm heart health over time. These evidence-based methods are far more effective than unreliable remedies. THIP Media Take The claim that a finger pose can reveal blocked arteries and improve circulation is false. There is no scientific evidence to support this. Arterial blockages require proper medical evaluation and treatment. If you are concerned about circulation or cardiovascular health, seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional.
