  • Last Updated on July 18, 2024 by Nivedita Quick Take Given the controversy around treating Covid with the drug Ivermectin (a parasitic drug that is also used to treat horses), a group of social media users started claiming that the Covid vaccines have not been tested on animals. We fact-checked and found that the claim is false. The Claim “The People making horse medicine jokes are getting injections that haven’t passed animal studies,” claims the meme that has been shared widely. Such posts can be seen here, here, here, here, and here. A screenshot is also given below. Fact Check Have the vaccines passed animal testing? Government bodies across the world have specified from time and again that the Covid vaccines will be first be tested on animals before human trials will begin. In a vaccine preparation guideline created by the FDA in June 2020, animal testing was mentioned as a very crucial phase of vaccine development. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has also clarified that vaccines have been tested on animals. Also, media reports at various stages of the vaccine developments tracked the different testing phases of the individual vaccines. For example, The National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases report about the beginning of the Moderna vaccine’s first phase of human trials clearly mentions that animal testing has been concluded before that.
