  • Fact Check: Violent robbery-gone-wrong video isn't from UK - it's from Brazil An old video of a robbery in Brazil was falsely shared as armed men attacking a person in England's Sunderland. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from a 2022 incident in Brazil. A video of a group of armed men brutally attacking a person is making the rounds on social media platforms. In the video, a person could be seen being robbed by two masked men. When he retaliates, a bunch of other people rush to the spot, beat up the victim, and stab him several times. Those sharing the clip claimed that this was a recent incident that took place at the Sunderland Metro Station in Tyne and Wear, England. Blaming media outlets for not reporting the incident, one person shared the video, writing, “Metro in Sunderland. Not shown on any news channels. Covered up and censored because it’s blacks with blades on a mugging spree. And it’s gonna get worse cause your government is to blame for letting these scum in.” The archived version of one such post can be found here. India Today found that this video is not from the United Kingdom at all. It’s an old incident from Brazil. Our Probe Reverse searching keyframes of the viral video led us to a report in O Globo, a Brazilian newspaper. In the report, we found the viral clip in higher resolution. According to the date stamp visible in the footage, the incident took place on February 20, 2022. A subsequent keyword search led us to a Brazilian TV news report. SBT Rio’s report stated that a man named Pablo Felipe Lima Bernardo was attacked at the Boiuna BRT station in Taquara, a municipality in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The assailants were reportedly caught by locals and handed over to the police. Bernardo miraculously survived the attack and was interviewed by the Brazilian news channel. The report contained a video of the scene of the crime. In it, we observed a machine with “RioCard Mais” written on it — similar to the one in the viral video. RioCard is a smartcard system used in the transport system of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The report also showed clips of residents who reportedly caught the five men involved in the robbery and the police arresting them. We then found several reports stating the same information about the incident. It’s noteworthy that the video in question went viral earlier as well. At the time, people claimed it was from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It was debunked by the Malaysian police. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
