  • Fact Check: Old mass shooting video falsely linked to Bangkok mall shootout by teen India Today found that the viral video is old and unrelated to the Bangkok mall shooting. It shows shootings that occurred between February 8 and 9, 2020, in another Thailand province, Nakhon Ratchasima. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The viral video is not of the recent Bangkok shooting by a 14-year-old. It is an old video from the 2020 Korat mass shooting in a different part of Thailand. A 14-year-old boy shot and killed two people in a spree on October 3 at Bangkok's Siam Paragon shopping centre. The assailant used a modified pistol initially intended for firing blanks, turning it into a weapon that shot real bullets. Following this, a video showing men taking cover behind wheelchairs and baby strollers in what appears to be a shopping mall while firing assault rifles has gone viral on social media. Allegedly, this video was of the mall shooting in Bangkok. A Twitter user, while sharing the viral video, wrote, "In Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, a 14-year-old boy opened fire at the Siam Paragon shopping center with a pistol, killing 3 people and wounding 4 people. A conflict broke out between the 14-year-old boy and the security forces at the shopping center." An archived version of the viral video can be seen here. India Today found that the viral video is old and unrelated to the Bangkok mall shooting. It shows shootings that occurred between February 8 and 9, 2020, in another Thailand province, Nakhon Ratchasima. Our Probe Upon reverse searching keyframes from the viral video, we came across social media posts from 2020 that stated the clip was from the Korat shooting in Thailand. Subsequent searches with relevant keywords led us to a February 2020 video on the YouTube channel of the British news network Sky News. This video contained a snippet of the viral video shot from another angle. In this video, several men, seemingly special forces, could be seen firing assault rifles. A blue baby stroller and several wheelchairs in the backdrop were also visible, consistent with the viral video. Another Sky News video report from the same time said that these videos were from inside the Terminal 21 mall in Korat, where soldiers had taken positions. In February 2020, a soldier from the Thailand Royal Army went on a rampage, killing at least 29 people and wounding 57 in Nakhon Ratchasima. Most of the victims were at the city’s Terminal 21 shopping centre, where the shooter laid an overnight siege with an assault rifle and ammunition stolen from his army base. In conclusion, it's evident that an old video of soldiers taking positions to neutralise a gunman who had laid siege in a mall in another part of Thailand is being shared as a recent shooting inside a shopping centre by a teenager in Bangkok.
