  • Fact Check: Video of man catching fire while burning Israeli flag is old, and from Iran Strap: India Today found that the viral video shows a 2021 incident in which an Iranian man's clothes caught fire while burning an Israeli flag during a Jerusalem Day protest. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video shows a 2021 incident in which an Iranian man’s clothes caught fire while burning an Israeli flag during a Jerusalem Day protest. Amid Israel’s ongoing siege of Gaza following the surprise attack by Palestinian group Hamas, protests — both, pro-Israel and pro-Palestine — have erupted across the world. Now, a video showing a protester's clothes accidentally catching fire while burning an Israeli flag is being widely shared on social media. A Twitter user posted this video and wrote, “Palestine people were burning the Israel flag, but d Israeli flag burned the Palestine people.” The archived version of this post can be seen here. India Today found that the viral video is neither recent nor from Palestine. It shows a 2021 incident in which an Iranian man’s clothes caught fire while burning an Israeli flag. Our Probe A quick reverse search of the viral video’s keyframes led us to a May 9, 2021, tweet by the news outlet Al Arabia. As per the tweet, the incident seen in the video happened in Iran during an Al-Quds Day event. Iranian journalist and activist Masih Alinejad, too, shared this video at the time and wrote, “Authorities in the Islamic Republic attempted to burn the Israeli flag, as they usually do. But this time, karma got them and they ended up burning themselves. Meanwhile, unlike the regime, ordinary Iranians increasingly refuse to burn or walk on Israeli and American flags.” Reports in the Jerusalem Post, the Times of Israel and Iran International also corroborate the fact that this incident happened in Iran. The Times of Israel mentioned in its report that the man whose clothes caught fire in this incident was Iranian. Thus, it’s clear that this video is neither recent nor from Palestine. What is Al-Quds Day? Al-Quds Day protest, also known as Jerusalem Day was initiated by Iran in 1979. On this day, people in Iran express opposition to Zionism and Israel’s occupation of the West Bank. Quds is the Arabic name for Jerusalem.
