  • Recently, a photo of an injured woman was shared online with the claim that Mani Karmakar, a Bangladeshi Hindu and former chairperson of the Women’s Commission, had her fingers severed in a brutal attack by Islamists. This claim has been widely circulated on Indian social media. A social media handle on X (formerly Twitter), Megh Updates, posted two photos of the woman with the caption: “Another horrific incident from Bangladesh: This is Hindu woman Mani Karmakar, former chairperson of the Women’s Commission of Purbadhala Upazila. Radical Islamists attacked her, attempted to murder her, and chopped off the fingers of her right hand.” Some posts on X making this claim can be found here, here, here, here and here. Fact-Check Upon investigation, Rumor Scanner confirmed that the claim is not true. The attack was not carried out by Muslims but resulted from a family dispute. Mani Karmakar (Moni Rani Karmokar)’s sister and mother were attacked by her sister’s husband, Chandranath Karmakar, due to family dispute and political reasons. The widely shared photo is not of Mani Karmakar but her sister, Mita Karmakar. Both Mita and her mother were attacked by Mita’s husband, Chandranath Karmakar, over a family dispute. While the incident was primarily domestic, Mani Karmakar, mentioned there were also political matters to the attack. We spoke with Mani Karmakar over the phone (+88014014**428), who clarified: “This was not a religious attack. The issue stemmed from a personal family matter. My sister, Mita Karmakar, and my mother were attacked by Mita’s husband, Chandranath Karmakar. Also, there were political factors involved in the matter.” Local journalists from the area also confirmed that the attacker was a relative, Mita’s husband, Chandranath Karmakar. The local correspondent of The Daily Observer, Mostak, told Rumor Scanner, “I inquired into the incident. The attacker is Mani Karmakar’s brother-in-law, and the attack stemmed from a family dispute.” Regarding the photo, he said, “The photo is not of Moni Karmakar but of her sister.” To sum up, the viral photo claiming that Mani Karmakar, a Hindu woman from Bangladesh, was attacked by Islamists is false. The incident actually stemmed from a family dispute (with political reasons involved), where her sister and mother were attacked by her sister’s husband. There was no religious angle in the incident.
