  • Fact Check: Did Brazil Police shoot ex-Prez Bolsonaro's son's plane? Thrilling chase video is from 2011 Brazilian Police crashed into Jair Bolsonaro's eldest son Flavio Bolsonaro's private plane as he attempted to flee the country. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The video is from 2011 and is not related to former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro or his family members. It shows Brazilian federal police chasing and stopping alleged smugglers. On January 8, supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stormed into and vandalised the Congress, the Supreme Court, and the Presidential Palace. Hours after the invasion, security forces managed to retake the three buildings. Reportedly, Brazil's current President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva ordered strict action against the rioters. Police arrested more than 300 people over the attacks. Following this, a dramatic video of a car chasing a plane on a dirt runway has been shared by many. A man in the car appears to shoot at the plane with an automatic weapon, damaging its wings and preventing it from flying away. Sharing this clip, Twitter users claimed, "This is not a movie, this is Brazilian Police crashing into Jair Bolsonaro’s eldest son, Flávio Bolsonaro, private plane as he attempts to flee the country. This comes as a response to the former Brazilian President’s role in attempting to overturn their democratic election." The archived version of this tweet can be seen here. Flavio Bolsonaro is the eldest son of Jair Bolsonaro. He is also a lawyer and a politician. AFWA's investigation found that the video has been on the internet since as early as 2011 and is not related to the former Brazilian President or his family members. AFWA Probe A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to various news reports. On November 4, 2011, India Today reported that this video showed how four men were arrested in a dramatic chase after a Brazilian police car crashed into their aircraft shattering its wings. On November 2, 2011, the same video has been shared by Brazilian news outlet Estadao's YouTube channel with similar details. Around the same time, the Daily Mail reported the same, adding that this chase was conducted by the Brazilian Federal Police in the Ribeirao Preto municipality. On December 1, 2015, Mirror reported that in the incident, five smugglers were arrested and Federal police seized 114 laptops as well as stolen printers and surveillance technology. Thus, it is clear that the video has nothing to do with the recent anti-democratic rioting in Brazil and definitely does not show Jair Bolsonaro's son’s plane being shot by the police.
