  • Last Updated on March 24, 2023 by Neelam Singh Quick Take A social media post claims men should masturbate 21 times a day to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. We fact-checked and found the claim to be Mostly False. The Claim A Twitter post in a reply to a post claims that men masturbate 21 times a day to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Fact Check What is prostate cancer? Prostate cancer is a type of cancer that occurs in the prostate gland. This gland is small and walnut-shaped that produces fluid to nourish and transport sperms. American Cancer Society website informs that the exact causes of prostate cancer is unknown. The existing research informs that prostate cancer is caused by abnormal changes in the DNA that induces a series of events to cause cancer. Does masturbating 21 times a day reduce the risk of prostate cancer? Not exactly. No evidence confirms that men should masturbate 21 times a day to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Still, we researched to find published evidence that can shed some light on the claim. As a result, we found a study published in 2016 titled ‘Ejaculation Frequency and Risk of Prostate Cancer: Updated Results with an Additional Decade of Follow-up’. We found that this study has tried to establish a relationship between ejaculation frequency and the risk of prostate cancer. Also, this study did note a benefit to an ejaculation rate of at least 21 times a month. Also, the findings suggest that frequent ejaculation throughout adult life may decrease the risk of prostate cancer. As we could not find more evidence, we consulted Dr Avreen S Shah who specializes in endourology, andrology, paediatric urology and reconstructive urology and works at Shah Hospital Advanced laparoscopic Gynae and Urology Centre, Ludhiana, Punjab as Consultant Urologist. He informs ‘Limited studies say frequent sexual activity can reduce the incidence of prostate cancer, though how frequently hasn’t been defined’.
