  • Last Updated on December 23, 2022 by Neelam Singh Quick Take A social media video claims chewing ginger remove heart blockages instantly after a heart attack. We fact-checked and found the claim to be Mostly False. No scientific evidence confirms the claim made in the video. The Claim A YouTube video shows a man recommending the crowd to eat ginger immediately after a heart attack. This can remove the blockage in the heart and save a life. This video is available on Facebook as well. Fact Check What is a heart attack? A heart attack is recognized by severe pain localized around the heart and left hand. Heart attack happens when a vein that carries blood and oxygen to the heart is blocked. Blockage occurs due to build-up containing fat and cholesterol plaques. This plaque can rupture to block veins by forming blood clots. Does eating ginger remove heart blockages instantly after a heart attack? Not exactly. No evidence recommends people to eat ginger immediately after a heart attack. A few research papers show ginger has curative properties that can remove heart blockages only if consumed for a certain duration. These papers informed that ginger has gingerol, phenolic compounds, and antioxidants that can reduce blockage and improve heart functioning. However, none of these papers talks about the instant effect of ginger on the plaque in the veins. This means people with heart problem can incorporate ginger in their routine diet. We researched the claimant and found that the speaker in the video is Acharya Manish Ji. He is a famous Ayurveda practitioner and meditation guru. To understand this claim better, we asked Dr. P. Rammanohar, Research Director, Amrita School of Ayurveda to explain the take of Ayurveda on ginger curing heart blockage. To this, he said, “Home remedies like eating ginger immediately after a heart attack cannot instantly remove heart blockages. It takes months and years to remove heart blockages after following a strict diet and lifestyle. No medicine has been able to remove blockages till now. Delaying immediate treatment due to such claims can become serious for the person suffering from heart attack.” Dr Dean Ornish, a cardiologist from the USA has demonstrated that removing heart blockages with diet and lifestyle depends upon what you eat, how you manage stress, how much you move and how much love and support you have. Dr. Annusuiya Gohil, an Ayurvedic Doctor, informs that “In Ayurveda texts, ginger is mentioned as ‘Vishva Bheshaj’ meaning the one that can treat many ailments thus making it a very useful herb in treatment. Still, it is nowhere mentioned to magically remove the blockage instantly after a major heart attack. Nowadays with the growing popularity of herbal and Ayurvedic medicines, a lot of studies are being done on herbs to scientifically study their effect on the human body, but with this a lot of false claims are also prevalent.” She further informs that “Ginger has an excellent effect on reducing overall triglyceride, cholesterol, LDL and VLDL. This can help with keeping the heart in a good shape.” Claims like these are quite common on social media. A few days back THIP MEDIA fact-checked whether should you perform CPR by watching social media videos only to show that such videos are not verified by credible sources.
