  • Fact Check: French riots spreading to London? Nope, this video is from 2022 India Today found that the video is from an anti-hijab protest that erupted after the death of an Iranian woman, Mahsa Amini, in 2022. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The video in question is from a September 2022 anti-hijab protest in London and is not related to the recent riots in France. Even as the riots in France are reportedly calming down, a video circulating on social media claims to show the unrest now spreading across the English Channel to London, England. The video shows two officers hauling a man with a bloody face to a police van. The situation quickly escalates when a group of people starts pelting objects, including water bottles, at the man. Eventually, the officers manage to get the man inside the van and drive away from the scene. “Riots in France are now spreading down into London. News media apparatus is not reporting on this at all,” claimed a Facebook post. India Today found that this video is old and shows a 2022 anti-hijab protest in London. Our Probe With the help of a keyword search, we found the viral video and its screenshots used in media reports from September 2022. According to a report published by the Australian portal, the video was recorded near Kilburn in northwestern London. Reportedly, the scuffle broke out at a public demonstration over the death of an Iranian woman Mahsa Amini. The 22-year-old died on September 16, 2022, in the custody of Iran’s notorious morality police, after she was arrested for allegedly not wearing the hijab in accordance with government standards. Following Amini's death, several anti-hijab protests took place across the globe, including in London. During a different anti-hijab protest held outside the Iranian Embassy in London, approximately 12 people were arrested and at least five police officers were seriously injured. On September 26, 2022, the viral video was also shared by the YouTube channel of the Daily Mail. “Iran protests turn violent in London: Riot police deployed, following the death of Mahsa Amini,” read the video’s title. We also found the same video shared on social media in September 2022. This video was previously fact-checked by India Today in October 2022 in a different context. While Switzerland and Belgium reportedly experienced unrest related to the violence in France, we could not find any credible reports of similar violent protests in London. Therefore, it is evident that the video in question is nearly a year old and is unrelated to the recent riots in France.
