  • A video featuring a group of men wielding swords, shouting insults on camera, and subsequently being paraded by police while apologising for their behaviour is circulating online. It is being shared with a communal claim that it shows the police personnel reprimanding Muslim youth who were allegedly threatening the authorities in Madhya Pradesh. (Archives of similar claims can be found here and here.) Is the claim true?: No, the claim is false. This video is from Bhopal, where a group of Hindu men made it and uploaded it to social media. All the men in the clip have been arrested. Bhopal police also refuted any communal link and clarified that all miscreants were Hindus. What we found: We divided the viral video into multiple keyframes and ran a Google reverse image search on some of them. We came across a similar clip on YouTube on a channel called Mahakal News 24x7. It stated, "Bhopal's TT Nagar police station took out a procession of miscreants." We ran a keyword search using the same words as the video's title and found multiple news reports about this incident. NDTV reported that Bhopal police apprehended the indivduals after they shared a video where they hurled insults and waved swords following a brawl. The report mentioned that the authorities captured the offenders in under twelve hours and displayed them in public. During the procession, the wrongdoers held their ears, expressed regret, and promised not to engage in such behaviour or produce such a video again. The individuals were recognised as Akash Gajbi, Uday Sarathe, Akash Soni, Nitesh Jat, Lucky Sen, Jai Rawat, and Hrithik Valmiki. There was no mention of a communal angle in any of the news reports. The Quint spoke to the station-incharge of TT Nagar police station (where the case was registered), Sudhir Arjariya, who denied a communal angle and said all the arrested were Hindus. Conclusion: The video is being shared with a false communal angle on social media. (Not convinced of a post or information you came across online and want it verified?
