  • FACT CHECK: Does This Video Show Palestinian Militants Staging a Funeral? A video shared on Facebook purportedly shows Palestinian militants holding a fake funeral. Verdict: False The video, which was taken in March 2020, shows children in Jordan staging a fake funeral to skirt COVID-19 restrictions. Fact Check: Since May 10, violent fighting between Israel and Hamas, a Palestinian militant group, has resulted in over 200 deaths from airstrikes and rockets, The Washington Post reported. A May 10 video shared on Facebook appears to show a group of people carrying a body on a stretcher in the street. After they walk a few feet, a siren can be heard, and they place the stretcher on the ground in the street and start to run. Soon after, the person that was on the stretcher gets up and runs away too. “Hamas tried to make a false funeral for a kid for tv… and than israel started to strike back…,” the video’s caption read. “look what happened.” (RELATED: Does This Video Show Hamas Rockets Landing In The Gaza Strip?) The video does not, however, show a fake funeral orchestrated by Hamas. Through a reverse image search of key frames, Check your Fact found the video in a March 2020 article published by Al Roeya, a United Arab Emirates media outlet, bearing the headline: “In the video, a fake funeral to break the ban in Jordan … and the police whistle returns the ‘dead’ to his home.” The video was also shared by Jordanian news outlet Roya News’ verified Facebook page in March 2020, with the caption, “Fake funeral! People still breaching the law despite the warnings.” Jordan implemented a strict, all-day curfew on March 21, 2020, prohibiting people from leaving their homes except in case of emergency, as a way to combat the spread of COVID-19, Al Jazeera reported. Restrictions have since been eased, and as of May 13, the curfew for individuals goes from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., according to the U.S. Embassy in Jordan.
