  • Last Updated on August 1, 2024 by Nivedita Quick Take There is widespread misinformation on the methods to detect pregnancy at home. One of the fairly popular DIY techniques is to use garlic for pregnancy testing. After thorough research we found out that this method holds no medical relevance and is False. The Claim A YouTube video claims that garlic can help detect pregnancy hormone hCG in the urine of a pregnant woman at home. The video goes on to say that if a film forms over the layer of chopped garlic and urine solution, this implies a positive result. In the absence of such a film, the female is not pregnant. Fact Check Can garlic really detect pregnancy at home? No, that is not possible. After an exhaustive research we were unable to find any supportive research articles that verify the claim. There is no evidence to prove that chemicals in garlic can actually react with hCG present in the urine of pregnant females. There are so many other DIY techniques (baking soda, shampoo, vinegar) which claim to test the presence of hCG hormone. But they hold no scientific credibility. One must steer clear of these misleading claims and always consult a qualified doctor. How is pregnancy tested? To test for pregnancy, a woman can use a pregnancy test kit, which is easily available at pharmacies. Females can put a few drops of their urine on an hCG testing stick. Alternatively, they can dip the stick into a cup of their urine. The test works by detecting a hormone called hCG, which is produced by the body during pregnancy. If hCG is present in the urine, it reacts with chemicals on the test stick. This causes a positive result to appear, indicating pregnancy. It’s a simple and quick way for women to find out if they’re pregnant. That too, in the comfort of their own home. If the home pregnancy test indicates a positive result, it’s advisable to confirm it with a healthcare provider. At the doctor’s office, they may conduct a confirmatory blood test to measure hCG levels accurately. Additionally, an ultrasound (USG) scan may be recommended to visualise the developing foetus and confirm the pregnancy. These confirmatory tests, including blood tests and ultrasound scans, help ensure the accuracy of the diagnosis and enable appropriate prenatal care planning. In one of the posts a video shows men using home pregnancy test strips to detect testicular Cancer in them. Such posts are often seen on social media. What is the most reliable method for pregnancy detection? We reached out to Dr Pooja Luthra (Obstetrics and Gynaecology) at Jivan Anmol Hospital, New Delhi, for her expert opinion, and she says, “the most reliable method for confirming pregnancy is through the use of commercially available pregnancy test kits. These kits are designed to detect the hormone hCG in urine, offering accurate results quickly. Furthermore, for additional confirmation, I recommend scheduling an appointment at a doctor’s office for a blood test or ultrasound scan, which can provide further certainty regarding your pregnancy status and the following treatment approach.” We also checked with Dr Saumya (Obstetrics and Gynaecology) at ESIC Medical College & Hospital, Patna, she goes on to say, “you can trust the easily available pregnancy test kits for detecting pregnancy initially. These kits effectively identify the hormone hCG in your urine, delivering accurate results really quickly. If you happen to receive a positive result at home, it’s advisable to visit a hospital or a clinic for further confirmation through a blood test or abdominal ultrasound exam. Do not trust unreliable homemade methods like using garlic for pregnancy testing at home. These tests ensure we obtain the most precise information to guide your care effectively in both the cases ー wanted or unwanted pregnancy.” Why is it important to go for hCG testing kits? Unreliable DIY techniques like using garlic for pregnancy testing at home poses risk for the wellbeing of women. Using hCG testing kits is important because they provide reliable results when checking for pregnancy. Reliable testing methods ensure accurate detection, giving you peace of mind about your pregnancy status. Moreover, seeking professional care is important because healthcare providers can offer guidance and support throughout your pregnancy journey or otherwise. They can also confirm pregnancy diagnoses with more accurate tests, such as blood tests and ultrasounds, ensuring you receive the appropriate care. Homemade DIY techniques might seem convenient, but they’re often unreliable and can lead to inaccurate results. Relying on these methods could delay proper medical care and affect both your health and the health of your baby. Additionally, relying on inaccurate methods could result in missed opportunities for abortion if needed, emphasising the importance of using trusted testing methods and seeking professional care promptly.
