Quick Take
A social media post claims that Children in the UK aged 5-11 will no longer be offered COVID jabs. We fact-checked and found the claim to be Mostly False.
The Claim
A Twitter post shared by Simone Gold, a physician and founder of the US-based group America’s Frontline Doctors, reads, “Children in the UK aged 5-11 will no longer be offered COVID jabs. The jab was also banned from children who had not turned five by the end of last month. This decision was due to concerns with developmental side effects in children. Wow.” The tweet gained vast exposure, was retweeted 17k times, and gained around 47k likes.
Fact Check
Are the children residing in the UK banned from getting vaccinated against COVID?
No. The Covid-19 vaccine has not been refused to those aged five to 11 in the UK, and almost everyone in that age group can still get vaccinated till the date of publication of this article. The official website of the UK government states that “on 22nd December 2021, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) advised that children aged 5 to 11 years in a clinical risk group or who are a household contact of someone who is immunosuppressed should be offered primary course vaccination with two 10 micrograms (mcg) doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine (Comirnaty®).”
The JCMR also advises a non-urgent offer of two 10 mcg doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine (Comirnaty®) to children aged 5 to 11 years of age who are not in a clinical risk group. However, it mentions that there should be an interval of at least 12 weeks between two doses. This must be done to increase the immunity against a potential future wave of COVID-19.
The NHS also confirms this by stating, “Children can get a 1st dose of the vaccine from the day they turn 5. Children who turned 5 on or after 1 September 2022 can only get a 1st and 2nd dose of a COVID-19 vaccine if they’re either at high risk due to a health condition or because of a weakened immune system or are living with someone who has a weakened immune system.”
Also, it’s unclear why Dr. Simone Gold claimed that eligibility had changed because of concerns with developmental side effects. There is no scientific evidence to prove that there were such concerns.
THIP Media Take: Children between the ages of 5 and 11 are eligible for Covid-19 vaccination if they turn 5 before September 1. However, children who turn five on or after September 1 can only get vaccinated if they are clinically vulnerable or are living with someone who is. Thus the claim stands mostly false.
