  • Fact Check: Not Cyclone Mandous! This video shows 4-month-old Kerala boat accident AFWA found that the viral video shows a boat accident that happened in August this year. It is not related to Cyclone Mandous. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video shows an accident that happened in Kollam, Kerala, back in August. It has nothing to do with Cyclone Mandous. Cyclone Mandous, which emerged from the Bay of Bengal, made its landfall in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, nearly 30 kilometres away from Chennai on December 9. It has since wreaked havoc in many parts of both Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, killing at least four people so far. Of the many photos and videos of the cyclone on social media was a short clip of a boat being rocked by huge waves. The boat could be seen tilting because of the water’s force and one person could be seen falling overboard as a result. A Twitter user shared the video, writing, “High tides in Kakinada Uppada Beach due to cyclone Mandous #CycloneMandous #AndhraPradesh”. AFWA found that the viral video shows a boat accident that happened in August this year. It is not related to Cyclone Mandous. AFWA PROBE Upon reverse searching frames from the video, we found it in an August 1 report by ETV Bharat. Per the report, the accident seen in the viral video happened at Neendakara, Kollam in Kerala. Four fishermen reportedly fell into the sea as waves rocked the boat. Later on, however, they were rescued. India Today and Mathrubhumi also reported this incident at the time. This made it clear that the video is not related to the cyclone at all. However, it is also true that in Kakinada, police blocked the entry of tourists on the Uppada Beach Road on December 10 because of the high tide. The Hindu reported that the local police warned that travelling on the Kakinada-Uppada road could be risky for vehicles because of unfavourable weather and weak roads being eroded by the cyclone.
