India Today Fact Check
The video is a decade-old footage from Egypt, shot during the August 2013 Rabaa massacre.
Israeli troops entered Gaza's largest Al-Shifa Hospital on November 15, prompting global concern for the hundreds of patients undergoing treatment. Israel called it a "precise and targeted operation against Hamas in a specified area" within the medical complex.
Now, a video that’s been widely shared shows people inside a building attempting to flee amid sound of gunfire. An X user shared the video and wrote, "BREAKING: FIRST FOOTAGE OF SHOOTING INSIDE THE AL SHIFA HOSPITAL. Does this prove Hamas was present inside the hospital, and clashing with the IDF as per this video?" An archived version of the post can be seen here.
India Today found that the video is decade-old footage from Egypt.
OUR PROBE
An X user responded to one such viral post and claimed that it was an old video from Egypt. Using this clue, we performed a keyword search that led us to a better-quality version of the same video on the YouTube channel of the Egyptian news organisation Rassd News Network (RNN), uploaded on August 16, 2013. The caption, written in Arabic, stated that it showed an intense shooting at detainees in Rabaa Hospital in Cairo.
Further searches led us to similar footage of destruction and chaos at a hospital in an Al Jazeera documentary on YouTube titled "Massacre in Rabaa", uploaded on August 17, 2016.
The Rabaa massacre is considered to be one of the deadliest in Egypt. In 2013, large sit-in protests were organised demanding the reinstatement of the country's first democratically elected president, Mohamed Morsi.
Thousands had gathered in Rabaa al-Adawiya Square in Cairo to support Morsi, who was ousted in a coup led by the military leader and current president, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Egyptian forces cracked down on protestors in “a scorched-earth assault” using armoured vehicles, bulldozers, ground troops, and snipers, resulting in hundreds of deaths.
Human Rights Watch reported 817 deaths during the Rabaa dispersal alone, with the overall toll likely exceeding 1,000 when accounting for unidentified bodies and missing individuals.
Thus, it's evident that a decade-old footage from the Rabaa Massacre in Egypt was falsely attributed to the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza.
