This video is not recent but shows Samaira giving health updates about Rohit Sharma when he was down with Covid-19 back in 2022.
A heart-warming video of Indian skipper Rohit Sharma’s young daughter Samaira is making the rounds on social media. In the clip, Samaira can be seen giving updates about his father to the person shooting her video, as she is heading outside with two women. She can be heard saying that Sharma is in his room, he is “almost positive” and that within a month, “he will laugh”. Many shared this video as a recent incident, shot after India's defeat in the World Cup 2023 final.
One person shared the video on Facebook writing, “Rohit Sharma is still heartbroken,” along with a hashtag related to the ICC Cricket World Cup where Australia bested India in the final. Some media outlets like the Navbharat Times and the Times of India also reported on this video, linking it to the World Cup.
India Today Fact Check found that this video is from 2022 and shows Samaira giving health updates of her father after he tested positive for Covid-19.
Our Probe
A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to a media report from June 28, 2022, containing a screenshot of the viral clip. According to it, Rohit Sharma tested positive for Covid-19 ahead of a test match between India and England, that was scheduled to be held in England on July 1, 2022. The viral video of Samaira was shot by reporters who asked her about her father’s health. Many people shared this video on social media at the time.
We found several media reports about this incident. On June 26, 2022, the Board of Control for Cricket in India tweeted that the Indian skipper had tested positive for Covid-19 and was quarantined. Sharma reportedly contracted the disease amid India’s four-day practice match against Leicestershire.
At the time, Samaira Sharma was reportedly asked about her father’s health by reporters in the UK, while she was walking out of a hotel room in Leicester.
It is noteworthy that, Rohit Sharma was indeed papped at the Mumbai Airport with his family post the World Cup on November 20 ( https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/videos/etimes/bollywood/anushka-sharma-virat-kohli-return-to-mumbai-post-world-cup-final/videoshow/105359501.cms ) after India’s World Cup final defeat. Along with him, Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma were also spotted at the time. However, neither the players nor their families spoke to reporters.
Hence, it is more than clear that an old video of Rohit Sharma’s daughter was falsely shared as recent.
