"Despite additional monetary stimulus in the leading economies, the environment has turned difficult for emerging markets." The decision was taken unanimously by the bank's nine governors. The move follows the US Federal Reserve's decision Sunday to cut the key interest rate to near zero. Brazil announced a stimulus package Monday of 147 billion reals (nearly $30 billion) in emergency spending to stave off the impact of the spreading pandemic. But the move has not calmed markets. The Sao Paulo stock exchange closed down 10.35 percent Wednesday, and the Brazilian real weakened nearly four percent to close at a record low of 5.2 to the dollar. js/jhb/bfm
