  • The novel coronavirus has killed at least 1,649,927 people since the outbreak emerged in China last December, according to a tally from official sources compiled by AFP at 1100 GMT on Thursday. At least 74,195,340 cases of coronavirus have been registered. Of these, at least 47,580,000 are now considered recovered. The tallies, using data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO), probably reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections. Many countries are testing only symptomatic or the most serious cases. On Wednesday, 13,886 new deaths and 720,746 new cases were recorded worldwide. Based on latest reports, the countries with the most new deaths were the United States with 3,784 new deaths, followed by Brazil with 936 and Germany with 698. The United States is the worst-affected country with 307,512 deaths from 16,980,842 cases. At least 6,298,082 people have been declared recovered. After the US, the hardest-hit countries are Brazil with 183,735 deaths from 7,040,608 cases, India with 144,451 deaths from 9,956,557 cases, Mexico with 115,769 deaths from 1,277,499 cases, and Italy with 66,537 deaths from 1,888,144 cases. The country with the highest number of deaths compared to its population is Belgium with 158 fatalities per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Peru with 112, Italy with 110, Bosnia-Herzegovina 107 and Slovenia 105. Europe overall has 498,962 deaths from 23,009,988 cases, Latin America and the Caribbean 477,404 deaths from 14,299,617 infections, and the United States and Canada 321,256 deaths from 17,460,096 cases. Asia has reported 208,118 deaths from 13,257,447 cases, the Middle East 85,841 deaths from 3,706,423 cases, Africa 57,403 deaths from 2,431,140 cases, and Oceania 943 deaths from 30,634 cases. As a result of corrections by national authorities or late publication of data, the figures updated over the past 24 hours may not correspond exactly to the previous day's tallies. bur-meh/cdw
