Reports identified the girl as 17-year-old Oumaima. Her family said she was abducted from her neighbourhood and raped by some 20 men in a slum near Casablanca. "My daughter was kidnapped while shopping and was held for 20 days", her mother told local media. "She convinced one of her kidnappers to let her go. They took her to hospital, where it was concluded she had been raped, assaulted and drugged". It was not immediately clear exactly when the alleged crimes took place. The girl's mother said a report had been made to the police and a medical certificate provided, but that "nothing" had been done. The Moroccan police (DGSN) said they had opened an investigation, but that the girl had "categorically refused to file a report" and had failed to "provide any information". They added that they had received a separate complaint against two individuals in 2018 for the "rape and sequestration" of the teen, but that her relatives withdrew it on the day the main suspect was arrested. The news has sparked outrage on social media, and supporters have created a Facebook page called "We are all Oumaima". The case recalls that of Moroccan teenager Khadija Okkarou, who in 2018 accused members of a "dangerous gang" of kidnapping and rape.
