The leader of Mali's ruling military junta, Colonel Assimi Goita, demanded that West African leaders lift sanctions on Tuesday following the nomination of a civilian interim president. A junta-appointed committee on Monday picked retired colonel Bah Ndaw to lead an interim government before staging elections and returning to civilian rule. The move came after the Economic Community of West African States said that it would not lift economic sanctions on Mali -- imposed after last month's coup -- unless it appointed a civilian as interim leader. sd-lal/eml/gd
