| - Here are the main developments since British toddler Madeleine McCann, or "Maddie, disappeared 13 years ago in Portugal, up to the identification of a new suspect on Wednesday by the German police. On May 3, 2007, Maddie, just days from her fourth birthday, vanishes from the family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in the Algarve, southern Portugal. She was sleeping with her twin two-year-old siblings, left in the family's holiday apartment at the resort as their parents had a meal with friends in a tapas bar just metres away. Two days later the neighbouring apartments, gardens and beaches are searched. The parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, both doctors, say the windows of the bedroom had been forced and the door was open on their return from dinner. Suspicion falls on international paedophile rings. On May 15, a Briton who took part in the searches becomes a suspect. On May 16, the parents, convinced that Maddie has been kidnapped, launch a media campaign and create a support fund, to enable themselves to hire private detectives. On August 8, traces of blood and other forensic evidence are found in the bedroom. On the 11, the judicial police is Portugal acknowledge that Maddie might be dead. On September 7, the parents become formal suspects and are freed, accused by the head of the investigation Goncalo Amaral of concealing their daughter's body after her accidental death. Two days later the McCanns return to Britain. Portuguese police close their case in July 2008 and lift the indictment against the parents and the Briton. Three days later, former inspector Amaral, fired in October 2007, publishes a book "The Truth of the Lie", in which he reiterates his accusations against the parents. They try in vain to get the book banned and launch libel proceedings. On May 13, 2011, British Prime Minister David Cameron calls in the London police to lend its expertise, following a request from the parents. In April 2012 it publishes a photo of Maddie, aged by computer, saying it believes Maddie could still be alive. The Portuguese authorities say there is not enough new available information to justify reopening the probe. In July 2013, the British police formally open a new probe saying they have serious new leads and are interested in 38 people. In October they examine the records of thousands of mobile phones and say they have so far questioned 442 people and identified 41 potential suspects, of whom 15 are British. They make no arrests. The press in Britain, Germany and the Netherlands publish two identikit pictures of a man seen carrying a blonde child. On October 24, 2013, Portugal reopens the inquiry into the disappearance, saying it has new information. In March 2014, British police investigating Maddie's disappearance say they are hunting a sex offender who had assaulted five young girls after entering their holiday homes, In June, the British and Portuguese authorities excavate the area where Maddie disappeared, but come up with no clues, according to Scotland Yard. In early 2017, ex-inspector Amaral, convicted in 2015 of libelling the parents, is acquitted on appeal. On June 3, 2020, police in Germany announce that they have a new prime suspect, a multiple child sex offender, who is currently in jail in Germany. kd-ang/jmy/lc
