  • The NFL's New England Patriots called off practice Friday after a player tested positive for Covid-19 one day after Cam Newton and two others returned from earlier virus positives. The Patriots also had a second person within the organization test positive Friday for the deadly virus, according to a post on the NFL's website, with the team awaiting re-test results to confirm the positives. New England conducted virtual meetings after wiping out the workout ahead of the Patriots' scheduled Sunday home game against Denver. The Denver game was originally set for last Sunday then temporarily moved to last Monday because of Covid-19 positive tests last week by cornerback Stephon Gilmore and practice squad defensive tackle Bill Murray last week. Patriots quarterback Newton, Gilmore and Murray all returned to practice on Thursday after being dropped from the team's Covid-19 reserve list, making them eligible to play again. Newton tested positive in early October, the first Patriots player to test positive for the virus, which prompted a one-day postponement of New England's loss at Kansas City. The Patriots' facility had been shut down Sunday, Monday and Tuesday before players returned Wednesday for weightlifting and conditioning work ahead of Thursday's first practice of the week. js/dj
