  • Here are the latest developments in the coronavirus crisis: Italy, the hardest hit country by the epidemic, reports a jump in new fatalities with 636 deaths, after a weekend that saw its lowest toll in two weeks. Spain, the second-worst affected country, however, sees its fourth consecutive daily decline in deaths from the virus, with 637 new fatalities recorded on Monday, its lowest for 13 days. The United States' death toll tops 10,335 with at least 347,003 confirmed infections, becoming the third worst affected country in terms of deaths. That came after Surgeon General Jerome Adams warned: "This is going to be our Pearl Harbor moment, our 9/11 moment, only it's not going to be localised." In New York confinement measures are extended to April 29. At least 73,139 people have died around the world, of whom nearly three quarters in Europe, since the novel coronavirus emerged in China in December, according to an AFP tally compiled around 1900 GMT Monday based on official sources. The pandemic has killed more than 52,498 people in Europe, including 16,523 in Italy, 13,055 in Spain, 8,911 in France and 5,373 in Britain. More than 1.31 million cases have been officially recorded around the world. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who was diagnosed with coronavirus late last month, has been moved to an intensive care unit after his condition worsened, his office says. The 55-year-old, who was admitted to a London hospital on Sunday evening for tests after continuing to suffer a cough and high temperature, has asked Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab "to deputise for him where necessary", the spokesman adds. The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that wearing masks alone will not be enough alone to defeat the pandemic. Its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also slams suggestions that Africa should be used as a testing ground for a vaccine as racist. European leaders are facing the "biggest test" to their union in the pandemic since the EU's founding, German Chancellor Angela Merkel says, a day ahead of a key eurozone finance ministers' conference to agree an economic rescue plan for the bloc. The message comes as France warns that it faces its deepest recession since World War II, The Japanese government plans to declare a state of emergency on Tuesday as new coronavirus infections spike in areas such as Tokyo and Osaka. It also proposes a massive stimulus package worth $1 trillion (915 billion euros). Norway says it considers the coronavirus to be "under control" in the country, with the number of new people infected by each patient having fallen to an average of 0.7, down from 2.5 when semi-containment measures were introduced in mid-March. Argentina defers payments of up to $9.8 billion of its debt to 2021, in response to the coronavirus crisis. burs-jba/jmy/pvh
