  • Canada on Friday added an Islamic State group offshoot, two white supremacist organizations -- including one behind the US Capitol riots -- and an American neo-Nazi to its growing list of banned terrorist entities. The Islamic State in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Three Percenters and Aryan Strikeforce, as well as James Mason join 73 others on the Criminal Code list. "Intolerance and hate have no place in our society and the government of Canada will continue to do all we can to keep Canadians safe from all threats, including terrorism and violent extremism," Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said in a statement. Canada only two years ago started targeting far right organizations with sanctions for promoting violent extremist views, following a spate of attacks including the shooting of three Moncton police officers, the killing of worshippers at a Quebec City mosque and a van attack in Toronto. Mason -- an ideologue for the Atomwaffen Division accused of providing instruction on how to operate a terror cell -- is only the second individual to make the ranking, alongside former Afghan mujahideen leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, who was put on the list in 2005. Members of the Three Percenters have been accused by US authorities of plotting to kidnap Michigan's governor and face conspiracy charges in relation to the deadly US Capitol riot on January 6. Aryan Strikeforce members in Britain and the United States, meanwhile, have been convicted of producing chemical weapons and planning a suicide bombing of counter-protesters at a rally in Pennsylvania in 2016. Being added to the watch list does not automatically criminalize the groups themselves, but allows authorities to seize their assets and prosecute members or associates for carrying out extremist activities. Financial dealings with listed individuals or groups is also prohibited. amc/st
